Carried an calming air, with complete competence in his field. His voice, it’s tone and language allowed complete confidence in the procedure. No question was of insignificance. Just totally a wonderful man.

From the first moment my partner and I met Mr Cudlip, we both felt completely confident that my regrown pituitary tumour would be handled with sensitivity and great expertise. After over six years of careful monitoring, I finally underwent the operation on October 4th 2021. During all the previous telephone conversations (because Covid prevented face-to-face meetings) Mr Cudlip had listened intently to my usual long list of questions and done his very best to answer them fully. I never went away from any conversation feeling dissatisfied with the answers I had been given. Because of my age (86), Mr. Cudlip decided - to minimise the risk - that he would slightly alter the operation that I might have been given earlier. This all made perfect sense to me. During my hospital stay (where everyone we met was so kind and helpful) Mr Cudlip visited me regularly - on one occasion even playing me some music written by his very talented daughter (whom we wish every success in her chosen career). He even visited the morning of the operation and I felt perfectly safe with the looming procedure in his very capable hands. Afterwards he came to tell us that everything had gone smoothly and he had been able to remove more than he had hoped. The best thing I think my partner and I can say is that Mr Cudlip comes over as being totally 'human', unlike some pompous surgeons that we have met! We both felt, throughout, that here was a person who really cared about each patient and was willing to give his precious time listening to all their doubts, worries and lighter subjects too. We really do not think there is any reason for changing at all. Just, please keep up the good work and thank you for everything, from the bottom of our hearts.

This is more a reflection on all that I experienced on my recent visit to the Churchill and mirrors an E Mail I had sent following a previous visit in May 2020. Before I actually met with Mr Cudlip I had already had a very comprehensive telephone discussion with Dr Pal. On arrival at the Churchill I was met by a very professional young nurse who carried out a number of procedures and constantly kept me updated on what was happening and why and dealt with all my queries. I had a long discussion with a Doctor who asked a number of pertinent questions but more particularly gave me a thorough overview of the position and role of the pituitary gland and the impact that my tumour was having. The review with Mr Cudlip was concise and at no time did I feel I was being talked down to. The use of MRI screenshots was excellent and again helped me see the reality of the medical issues. The explanations of the medical procedures, the risks and benefits and the reasons why an early intervention was advisable all were all clearly expressed and helped me make an informed decision. Knowledge helps dispel fear, although I may be apprehensive about surgery I came away from the Churchill knowing that this was a Team of professional people that I could trust and I would be in good hands.

Profile

Simon Cudlip is currently Lead Clinician for Neurosurgery at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust.

He graduated from King’s College School of Medicine, London in 1990. During this period he also gained a BSc first class (Hons) in immunology. Following a period of training in general surgery in London he entered the neurosurgery training programme in London based at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, and the Atkinson Morley Hospital, London. During this period of training he completed his MD thesis in MRI imaging of peripheral nerve and published numerous papers on this topic and on MRI spectroscopy of brain tumours.

On completion of his general neurosurgical training in 2003, he spent a year as a fellow at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square as the Pituitary Fellow to Mr Michael Powell. In addition to this he visited Naples and Bologna to gain experience in endoscopic pituitary surgery, and Seattle as a visiting fellow.

In 2004 he was appointed as Consultant in Neurosurgery with a specialist interest in pituitary and skull-base surgery in Oxford, and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Neurosurgery at the University of Oxford. Since this time he has performed nearly 2000 transsphenoidal operations for pituitary disease, these have been performed using a pure endoscopic technique since 2007. As a result of this Oxford has the best established nationally recognised pituitary surgical training fellowship in the UK. These endoscopic techniques have now been developed further with his colleague Puneet Plaha, and extended into surgery for intrinsic brain tumours. He has published numerous papers, book chapters and reviews on the topic of pituitary surgery, and is a tutor at the College of Surgeons of England and numerous international courses, teaching endoscopic surgical techniques.

He also has an interest in minimally invasive brain surgery for tumours, and minimally invasive spine surgery. He also runs a course on cervical disc replacement surgery in Amsterdam and the UK.

More recently he has travelled to Uzbekistan and India, operating and lecturing on pituitary surgery.
